Harboring more than 700 dead or forgotten cities,
The Limestone Massif of Northern Syria is distinguished
by white rocky formations, arid mountains
and lush valleys and renowned for its amazing
archaeological sites and rich cultural and natural
heritage.
It extends along a 140 km North - South axis that
passes through the ancient cities of Cyrrhus and
Apamea and ranges in width from 20 to 30 Km. It is
bounded to the east by Hama, Aleppo and A’zaz,
and to the west by the valleys of the Afrin and Orontes
Rivers.
The Simeon Mountain, one of three distinguished
areas of the “Limestone Massif” of Northern Syria,
shelters the three established hiking trails. The
“Simeon Mountain” area is located directly west of
Aleppo and is bounded to the north by the valley of
Afrin.
A number of “parks” within the area are being classified
as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO, including
the areas of the 1st and 3rd trails, and the village of
Sinkhar along the 2nd trail.
